Several studies have described how information on rewards influences behavior and how the brain uses this information to control learning and memory processes. The nature of reward seems o be processed in different ways by neurons in distinct brain structures, ranging from the detection and perception of rewards to the use of information about predicted rewards for the control of goaldirected behavior. The neural substrate underlying this processing of reward information is clearly involved in improving learning and memory processes. Evidence from several experimental studies indicates that this neural system can facilitate memory consolidation in a wide variety of learning tasks. From a molecular perspective, certain cardinal features of reward have been described as forms of memory. Studies of human addicts and of animal models of addiction have shown that chronic drug exposure produces stable cellular and molecular changes in the brain that underlie the long-lasting behavioral plasticity associated with addiction. These molecular and cellular adaptations involved in addiction also seem to be involved in learning and memory processes. Dopamine seems to be a critical common signal to activate various genetic mechanisms that ultimately remodel synapses and circuits. Although memory is an active and complex process mediated by different brain areas, the neural substrate of reward seems able to improve memory consolidation in several paradigms. Therefore, we believe that there are many equivalent traits between reward and learning and memory processes.

El consumo de sustancias de abuso constituye un problema social con importantes repercusiones en diferentes campos y ámbitos. La adicción es un estado determinado por el uso compulsivo de una droga donde el sujeto carece de un control eficaz para adecuar su conducta a las demandas del medio persistiendo en el consumo de ésta, a pesar de conocer las consecuencias a largo plazo de dicho consumo y a pesar de todos los intentos y tratamientos trazados para controlarlo. ¿Por qué esta persistencia, acaso modifican las drogas nuestro cerebro? El objetivo principal que persigue este libro es intentar explicar la relación entre cerebro y adicción, analizando los cambios que producen las drogas en el tejido nervioso. Algunos autores sugieren que la adicción representa una usurpación patológica de los procesos neurales implicados en el aprendizaje. En base a esta hipótesis, el uso compulsivo y persistente de una droga podría explicarse por los mecanismos moleculares y celulares que subyacen a la formación de la memoria en diferentes circuitos cerebrales. ¿Qué es lo que convierte a un usuario de una droga en un adicto?

Distribution: Northern part of South America (including Trinidad and Tobago) to the center of South America east of the Andes.

Boa c. constrictor from the distribution area of the Amazon and Orinoko flow often have a shining red tail. They are therefore called "red-tail boas". Except the green tree pythons (Morelia viridis) they are the most desired boids.

Boa c. constrictor and Boa c. occidentalis are the largest members of the Boa constrictor - family. According to the literature, specimens longer than 17 feet are found in the wild. But meanwhile it turned out that these datas are based on an Anaconda (Eunectes noteus) who was mistakenly described as a Boa constrictor. According to todays knowledge Boa constrictor can grow to a maximum length of 12 ft.

In captivity boas remain smaller as in the wild. A redtail boa of 10 feet in length is a rarity in captivity (Average size of the females is about 7 ft. in length).

The most important signs of Boa c. constrictor are the bat-shaped, brown to dark-brown middorsal blotches ("widows-peaks"), yet we saw also hour-glass shaped saddles on wildcaught Surinam redtails from the region around the village of Pokigron.

High in demand are the ivory colored Brazilian redtails. They are then nicest and rarest of all Boa c. constrictor because Brazil practiced a stringent export prohibition as yet. An aberrant saddle pattern is frequently found in Brazilian redtails.

In 1987, the second python mutation was produced in captivity. Tom Weidner of Des Moines, Iowa, purchased an olive green, patternless Burmese python from Western Zoological Supply in West Covina, California, in 1974. The $650 selling price was, at the time, high. The snake--a male--was not a motivated breeder. It bred only once, producing offspring in 1984, and died shortly thereafter. These heterozygous snakes produced their first offspring in 1987. A percentage of these snakes exhibited the new trait.

The snake has been named "green" or "patternless" after the original adult, and these names are accurately descriptive of the adult animals. The babies, however, are neither green nor patternless. Hatchlings of this type are khaki-colored, fading to silver on the sides, with a broken line of chocolate brown spots down the center of the back and sometimes scattered randomly along the sides. With age and size, the snakes darken to an olive green, and the spots fade becoming less and less apparent.
